About Us

Introduction

Kotram Institute is an independent, non-profit institution founded with a view to conducting research on social, political and cultural issues that shape and affect the lives of the people who are living in the Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka, their diasporas, other communities that are historically, linguistically, culturally and politically connected to them and Tamil speaking people who live outside the Northern and Eastern Provinces including Tamil-speaking Muslims and Malaiyaha Tamils. This Institute aims to disseminate its research through various media including as creative and artistic expressions. It will function as a space where ideas can be shared, discussed and debated in a democratic and scholarly spirit.

Kotram will coordinate with intellectuals and activists whose work focuses on the Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka and Tamil-speaking communities on the island. It aims to provide an independent space for established and emerging scholars to develop their work and find support from one another.

The Institute comprises a team of research scholars whose work shows a commitment to social, political and economic justice in the region. It strives to facilitate researchers by providing them with an audience and fora for interaction and discussion pertaining to their research. Kotram works collaboratively with other social institutions such as universities and centers of higher education and community-based groups that are interested in studying the various aspects of this region. Kotram also gives importance to the career development of academics and researchers in the areas of social sciences and the humanities. All in all, it is a platform for knowledge sharing, peer reviews, constructive criticism and collaboration.

Kotram will promote open and rational discourses. The Institute is committed to inclusive and transparent scholarly practices and welcomes contributions from individuals and organizations with similar interests. 

Vision

Our vision is to contribute to the creation of a just and pluralistic society in the Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka and support Tamil-speaking communities all over the island in their quests for social, political and economic justice through dialogue, research, creativity, activism and dissemination of knowledge.

Objectives

  • Conducting quality research on social, political and cultural issues and disseminating the findings and conclusions via dialogue and creative expressions such as art, poetry, theatre and cinema. 
  • Makinging scholarship accessible to the wider community through publications, conferences, seminars, workshops, online fora, campaigns and collaboration with the media.
  • Working together with independent research groups, institutions and universities that engage in research and offering a common platform for collaboration and information exchange while providing required resources and support for emerging research scholars.
  • Gathering information from present and previous research and analysing and reviewing them in a scholarly manner. Organising these works into themes with a view to supporting current research and designing future projects.
